Our Approach

Our program is informed and guided by the latest research in the fields of biopsychology and neuroscience as it relates to the developing brain. The implications of this research are that new learning, and therefore change, cannot occur until a child is emotionally, physically and cognitively regulated. Helping the child regulate is the first step in our approach.

Our primary method for teaching regulation skills is to utilize the child’s own enthusiasm and motivation to be in relationship with the horse. Additional strategies for helping children regulate include movement, energy work and sensory integration techniques utilizing both the equine experience and the natural surroundings of our facility.

The theoretical framework supporting our approach draws from animal assisted therapy, sensorimotor psychology, eco-psychology, trauma focused – cognitive behavioral therapy, sensory integration, gestalt, and other brief, solution focused therapies.

Parental involvement in our program is strongly encouraged as it plays a vital role in successful outcomes. In cases where parent/child relationship repair is a central treatment goal, our program is designed for parents to become more progressively involved as the process unfolds. As trust, respect, relationship skills, attunement and confidence increase the parent moves from an observer role to that of supporter. And finally, under the guidance of the treatment team and through specialized equine activities, the parent assumes their natural leadership role in the family constellation.
