By combining horses, nature and just plain fun, the children we serve get a chance, perhaps the only one they will ever have, to just be kids. In the stillness of a silent nature walk, in the presence of a noble and accepting equine friend, in shared laughter with others, children discover their own inner reservoir of strength and resilience that can be drawn upon for a lifetime. By combining these experiences within a framework of best practices in mental health and healing, we further enhance their potency. And while a cure for all that ails the lives of our children cannot be found in a single summer program, we believe we offer a life changing experience and a powerful antidote to the harsh reality of their daily lives.

Our summer trauma-focused intensive, Osage Strong, will provide an array of equine-assisted and nature-based programming designed to promote healing, build resilience and explore post-traumatic growth for 50 at-risk youth in our area. 2018 programming will run from June 5th though August 9th. Osage Strong is fully funded by Epstein Teicher Philanthropies and The Sammy and Solly Fund. There will be no cost for children to participate. A referral from a counselor, teacher, case manager or other mental health service provider who is familiar with the child’s circumstances will be required.

Based on their unique needs, children between the ages of 8-17 will be served through either individual equine-assisted psychotherapy sessions, psycho-educational groups or a therapeutic, social-emotional learning camp. All programming will be rooted in evidence based practices that have been adapted for the equine-assisted psychotherapy and learning experience. Go Here to download the registration packet and to learn more about which of these program options best suits the child you are referring and how to register that child.

Osage Strong activities will conform to the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) standards. All programming will include at minimum a licensed professional counselor and an EAGALA certified Equine Specialist. Osage Corral staff have also had extensive additional training in the treatment of trauma. Activities happen on-the-ground only. There will be no horseback riding. Please make sure the child you are referring understands this to avoid unnecessary disappointment.
